Summary of the ongoing and resolved African swine fever outbreaks in Asia during the period from October 2 to October 15, 2020.

This African swine fever update covers the period from October 2 to October 15, 2020. It is a summary of all Immediate Notifications (INs) and Follow-up reports (FURs) submitted to the OIE by countries in the region to report the occurrence of the disease since 2018.

Ongoing outbreaks

In China, 166 outbreaks have been resolved since the first occurrence of the disease in 2018. and 19 outbreaks are still ongoing. India first reported the disease in May of 2020 although the first outbreaks started in January. Eleven outbreaks are currently ongoing, all of them in the Northeast Region of the country. South Korea has been battling ASF since 2019. Currently, 715 outbreaks are ongoing. The administrative divisions of Gyeonggi-Do, Incheon Metropolitan City, and Gangwon-Do have been affected. Papua New Guinea first reported ASF in March of this year. Four outbreaks are currently ongoing. The Philippines notified the first occurrence of the disease on September 2019. In total, 303 outbreaks are ongoing. The disease was reported in Russia for the first time in 2007. Most recently, the disease has affected administrative divisions bordering China and Mongolia. Five outbreaks are still ongoing. Timor-Leste first saw ASF in September 2019. A total of 126 outbreaks are currently ongoing. Vietnam has 1,475 outbreaks ongoing, with clusters of up to 491 outbreaks having been reported since the first occurrence of the disease in the country (February 1, 2019).

Countries in which all outbreaks have been reported as resolved

The following countries all reported the first occurrence of ASF in 2019 and have since resolved all outbreaks: Cambodia (13 outbreaks), Hong Kong (3 outbreaks), Laos (141 outbreaks), Myanmar (6 outbreaks), and Mongolia (11 outbreaks).

Indonesia: The first occurrence of the disease was notified on December 17, 2019. In total, 521 outbreaks in backyard pig farms were reported in Sumatera Utara Province. The disease was detected following reports of an increase of pig deaths on early September. Official tests identified the presence of African swine fever on November 18, 2019.

North Korea: notified the first occurrence of the disease in the country on May 30, 2019. No update has been submitted since then.
